Desk Depth Explained: 20, 24, or 30 Inches

Twenty inches is a compromise

A 20-inch desk can work for a laptop or a display on an arm. It leaves little room for large stands, paper, or a deep keyboard position.

Twenty-four inches is the compact default

For many small rooms, 24 inches balances monitor distance and chair clearance. Exact comfort still depends on screen size and whether a mount recovers surface depth.

Thirty inches supports deeper work

Creative tasks, larger displays, and paper layouts benefit from depth, but the room must still allow the chair to move and the user to exit safely.

Test with tape

Mark the proposed footprint on the floor and desk plane before ordering. Walk the room and open nearby doors and drawers.
