How to Measure a Small Home Office Before Buying Anything

Measure obstacles, not just walls

A wall can be 60 inches wide while only 48 inches are usable. Baseboards, radiators, window trim, outlets, and doors reduce the real envelope. Record the narrowest clear width from floor to desktop height.

Chair clearance changes the plan

Desk depth is only half of the footprint. Add the chair in its working and exit positions, then protect the walkway. In a mixed-use bedroom, this often decides whether a 24-inch or 20-inch-deep desk is realistic.

Photograph the underside

Monitor arms and cable trays fail when an apron or crossbar occupies the clamp zone. Measure edge thickness and the flat underside depth before choosing accessories.

Map power without creating a trip line

Record the outlet distance and a safe cable route. A cheap extension that crosses the chair path is not a completed setup.
